Dinner With The Chairman

Memphis Tourism Foundation chairman Jerry Klein continues his restaurant reviews:

In the past decade or so, happily, Memphians have begun to change their likes and dislikes in the food arena.  Palates change and thats a good thing.  Memphis has become home to a sizeable Indian population, and my wife and I have become hooked on Indian cuisine

There are several excellent Indian restaurants in town, and we have tried them all. However, we have settled on one in particular, Bombay House, 1727 N. Germantown Parkway, Cordova, TN.  38108.  They're open seven days with a luncheon buffet daily, but there is no buffet at dinner.

We have lunch there at least once a week without fail.  I might add, that neither of us care for buffets,  and this is the only one we visit.  There's a very nice assortment of dishes with a wide variety of tastes.  The smells are also delightful.

We usually start with Daal Haharni,  split lentils with herbs and spices cooked to a hearty soup great for a wintery day.

Following the soup, we dove into the Vegetable Somosas (crisp patties filled with potatoes and peas then mildly spiced and deep fried).  Along with the Somosas, we added Basmati Rice and Keema Matar, or minced lamb.  As a lamb lover, this dish is a real tongue thumper.  It's a dish prepared with minced lamb, fresh green peas, blended spices, and tomatoes.  Very tasty.  Chicken curry, a traditional dish, follows and is prepared with boneless chicken, onions, garlic ginger, tomatoes and curry spices.  Another choice which you might like if you don't care for the Minced Lamb is the Lamb Meatballs.  They are slow-cooked in a tomatoe and butter gravy and are very tasty.

We are both carnivores, but their vegetables are wonderful!  The Aloo Matar is potatoes and green peas cooked with onions and tomatoes and are mildly spiced.   Aloo Ghobi is a califlower and potato dish prepared the same as the Aloo Matar. It too, is excellent.  We always have an order of Naan, which is an Indian leavened bread.  It's served hot and slightly spicy.  Naan with a touch of garlic is also available,

By the time we're consumed too much lunch, desert is usually bypassed.  There is a sizeable array of various kinds, but we've not been there yet.  Hopefully on our next visit.

I must warn you by saying this is really Not gourmet fare.  It's everyday food that is a delight to the taste buds.  The tastes are, in my humble opinion, delicious.  Once in a while, a dish may be a bit too spicy for your taste.  But thats OK.  Speaking of the servers, most speak excellent English.  Several don't do so well in that department, but as long as we've been going there, that hasn't ever been a problem.

All in all, the buffet at Bombay House is a delightful interlude.  If you've never thought about it, be adventurous and give it a try.  The buffet is not available in the evening and the menu is easy to navigate.  Their website is: www.bombayhouserestaurant.com.  Credit cards are accepted.
