Preparing the Workers of Tomorrow

Memphis Tourism Foundation has created a special new program to acquaint young people with the career opportunities of the tourism industry and to teach them the workplace skills that prepare them for the future.

The Tourism and Hospitality Summer Institute - supported by the City of Memphis Office of Youth and Community Affairs - offers an eight-week program for high school students. The course prepares them for the world of work by providing them with a firm foundation and full understanding of what creates a good work ethic and basic job readiness skills.

More than 100 youths at three sites participated in the inaugural class of the Institute in 2007. In addition to job skills and work skills, they met and talked with leaders of the hotel and tourism industry, took behind-the-scenes tours of major employers, and visited attractions that anchor the Memphis tourism industry.

The culmination of the Institute is when each graduate has at least three interviews with area employers during the jobs fair.
